At Sensory Heroes we provide Ayre’s Sensory Integration, a specialised approach that focuses on the brain’s ability to process and organise sensory information from the environment effectively. The overall goal is to help the brain integrate and interpret sensory information more accurately so that the body is more regulated throughout the day. When the body is more regulated, the individual is able to do and engage with what they want, without going into fight/flight/freeze all the time!
“A sensory integration environment (the clinic room) mimics a “natural” play environment” - Ayres, 1972
The clinic room is set up in a way where the following is provided:
⚪️invites play
⚪️provides sensory opportunities
⚪️physically safe
⚪️space to move, swing and crash!
The sessions are child led, where the therapist can introduce complexity and challenges from observing the child’s responses through play. What the therapist is looking for is called a somatomotor adaptive response where the child is effectively interacting with the environment to meet a challenge, experience mastery, through organising sensory information. A lot of work that just looks like play and fun!
